Apps for Cruisers

When we started cruising we couldn’t find many apps that helped cruisers, other than navigation apps. I’m a retired software developer and so, as a hobby, I’ve been developing my own apps to fill the void and I’d like to share these.

The apps are entirely developed by me, and used on our yacht. They are mostly free to use forever (all except for Boat Lights) and I encourage you to use them.

If you find any of my apps useful, I’d greatly appreciate any donations to help keep me caffeinated.

Boat Lights provides a comprehensive database of the various signals that may be encountered when navigating: vessel lights, day shapes, sound signals, navigations marks. It uses a smart, unique, Draw-What-You-See search engine to quickly search its database to determine the meaning of the many different lights, shapes and sounds used by other vessels. Use it both as a training aid and an on-water reference.

Equipment is an advanced asset management and maintenance list app. It helps you keep track of your boat’s fixtures, fittings and contents. It can just as easily be used for an RV, caravan, a house, or personal belongings. Anything really. It keeps a list of your valuables, recording details such as: purchase cost and date; receipt; instruction manuals; and other relevant information. You can then assign maintenance tasks to the individual assets; the tasks may be ad-hoc or scheduled, building a maintenance history over time.

The app is available for iPhone, iPad and Mac (Apple Silicon only), and works best on iPad.

Equipment replaces Assets on the Go.

Where We Go is a map based log book. Useful for both land and water travels, this app records a formatted log of where you’ve been along with other important events along the way.

Where We Go is currently going through a major update and will be released as a new app, Cruiser Log, in the second half of 2023.
